The Department of State Services (DSS), Oyo State Command, successfully thwarted a potential ethno-religious crisis in Oyo Town through strategic and impartial intervention in two highly sensitive incidents that threatened public peace and national security.
The crisis first emerged when Islamic clerics proposed the establishment of a Sharia Court in the ancient town. Acting swiftly, the DSS summoned the clerics for a sensitization meeting, emphasizing that the creation of courts is governed strictly by the Nigerian Constitution. Following this engagement, the clerics rescinded their plans and issued a formal retraction through national newspapers.
A source within the DSS highlighted that the agency’s action was guided by its constitutional mandate to detect and neutralize threats to national cohesion and security. “The clerics were sensitized on constitutional provisions regarding court establishment, leading to their decision to abandon the proposal after our intervention,” the source stated.
In a related development, the DSS arrested a traditionalist for publicly burning a copy of the Quran and circulating a video of the act on social media. The video, which featured provocative rhetoric and claims of impunity, incited public outrage. According to DSS officials, the suspect will face prosecution on charges including incitement, disturbing public peace, and threatening national security.
The DSS reiterated its commitment to professionalism and national unity, attributing its swift actions to a balanced and preventive approach that forestalled potential violence. “Without our intervention, the situation could have escalated into widespread attacks targeting individuals of differing religious beliefs,” the source added.
The agency stressed that its actions were motivated solely by patriotism and the need to safeguard public order. Plans are underway to prosecute the suspect, ensuring accountability for actions that undermine societal harmony.
By demonstrating a proactive stance, the DSS reaffirmed its role as a guardian of peace, emphasizing that it operates without bias to protect the constitutional rights and security of all Nigerians.
