Djokovic Alleges Poisoning Incident Before 2022 Australian Open Deportation

Novak Djokovic has claimed that he was poisoned with lead and mercury-contaminated food while detained in Melbourne ahead of his deportation from Australia in 2022, just before the Australian Open.

The tennis star, whose visa was revoked due to his refusal to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, was held in a detention facility while pursuing a legal challenge to remain in the country. In a recent interview with *GQ* magazine, Djokovic revealed, “I had some health issues. Upon returning to Serbia, tests showed elevated levels of heavy metals in my body, including significant amounts of lead and mercury.”

When asked if he believed his food had been deliberately contaminated, Djokovic responded, “That’s the only explanation.” However, when pressed for further evidence during a press conference in Melbourne, the 37-year-old declined to elaborate, stating, “I’d like to focus on tennis. The interview was conducted months ago, and the details are already public.”

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs refrained from commenting on the matter, citing privacy policies. However, officials noted that the Park Hotel, where Djokovic was held, provided detainees with freshly prepared, individually portioned meals. All catering staff reportedly held food safety certifications, and food samples were retained for quality control.

Despite the controversy, Djokovic emphasized that he bears no ill will toward Australians. Reflecting on the ordeal, he said, “Many Australians I’ve met since have expressed embarrassment over how I was treated. I’m grateful my visa was reinstated, and I truly enjoy competing in Australia.”

However, he added, “I’ve never met the individuals responsible for my deportation. If I do, I’ll gladly shake hands and move on.”

In a remarkable turn of events, Djokovic returned to Melbourne a year later and secured another Australian Open title, further cementing his legacy in the sport.
